Young Limousin breeding bulls: how the 2025 generation is performing

Apericub, young Limousin bull born in 2025, Château Pique-Sègue

47 calves were born at Château Pique-Sègue in 2025. Their 210-day weights are in, and this generation is living up to its promise. Here are the animals that stand out, and the bulls behind them.

The standout growth figures

Alex M4 holds the best 210-day weight in the herd: 378 kg, a daily gain of 1.58 kg from birth. Just behind, Astérix M4 weighed 373 kg, after setting the herd’s best 120-day weight at 230 kg. He is already TABS certified.

Artus M4 and Ace M4 follow at 369 kg. Ace M4 has one more argument: he is homozygous polled and will pass the trait on to every calf. Arrow, at 362 kg, made the most of his dam Olympe’s milk, a Reproductrice Reconnue (recognised breeding cow). Akira M4 was born at 55 kg and weighed 349 kg at 210 days.

Proven bloodlines

A good weight isn’t enough: we also look at where an animal comes from. Apericub, 337 kg at 210 days, is Tigra’s son and Joconde’s grandson, one of the great mothers of the herd. Aragon, 340 kg, is out of Tagliatel, who scores 111 for maternal value. Alto M4 descends directly from Etane, over five generations.

These young males don’t have their own published indexes yet. Their value therefore lies in their pedigree and their weights until the first evaluations come in. Keep in mind that a weight is not an index: indexes correct for the year, the season and the farm, and are what really predicts what a bull will pass on. Our guide explains how to read IBOVAL indexes.

Polled genetics in the young stock

Of the 47 calves born in 2025, 30 are already confirmed polled by genetic testing. Among the males, Arès M4, Arthur M4, Aristot M4, Acolyte M4 and Ace M4 are homozygous P/P. For a herd that wants to move quickly on this trait, these are the profiles to look at first. Read more in our article on polled Limousin genetics.

The bulls behind this generation

  • Ovni Ben: Reproducteur Reconnu Veaux Sevrés en ferme (a French herd-book qualification based on calves weaned on farm), 116 for calving ease and 109 for weaning. He is the most widely used sire in the herd, with 37 offspring.
  • Simba P: a milk bull (107), used to strengthen the maternal qualities of future females.
  • Nikos: muscle (113) and weaning (107), sire of Artus M4.
  • Trésor: the most muscled bull in the herd, 126 for muscular development and 123 for weaning.

For the next generation, new bulls have come in: Pablo, a Reproducteur Recommandé, Ulstar, at 116 for maternal value, and Urby ED, at 120 for skeletal development. Their first calves were born in 2026. Big Ben M4, by Ulstar, arrived at 59 kg, the heaviest birth weight ever recorded in the herd.
